Beyond the Score: Aptitude Testing and the Art of Professional Counseling

A client looks at solid data about their abilities and says, "That's not me." Now what? This short course shows why aptitude testing and counseling need each other, and teaches one move: going with the resistance, so clients reach honest self-knowledge on their own.

About this course

A client sits across from you, looks at solid assessment data about their own natural abilities, and says, “That’s not me.” What do you do next?

This short course answers that question by listening in on a candid conversation between a psychologist and three aptitude examiners in the Johnson O’Connor tradition. You will see why aptitude testing and professional counseling are not competitors but complements. One reads a person’s values, personality, and history; the other reads their natural abilities. And you will see why the best career work usually needs both. You will learn how the two disciplines refer clients back and forth, why people so often resist accurate information about themselves, and how a client’s hobbies quietly reveal the aptitudes they will not claim out loud.

At the center of the course is a single, portable counseling move: going with the resistance. Instead of arguing a client into accepting the data, you learn to move with their resistance, lower their defenses, and let them arrive at an honest self-picture in their own time. It is a small skill with a wide reach, and it applies far beyond career work.
