Too Busy for God: Spiritual Direction for High-Achieving Men

How to reach the man who says he doesn't need it

This asynchronous, self-study lesson (1.0 NBCC clock hour, content area: Human Growth and Development) equips counselors, pastoral care providers, and spiritual directors to accompany high-achieving men at midlife. Working from an interview with an experienced director, it analyzes a replicable direction method and grounds it in the psychology of self-regulation and virtue formation (Vitz, Nordling & Titus, 2020; Matous, 2015; Titus, 2006, 2024) and in the classical spiritual tradition (Teresa of Avila; Tanquerey, 1930). Learners complete a reflection activity, discussion questions, and a 10-item post-test (70% to pass).

the learner is not hiring this course to "study spiritual direction" in the abstract, but to solve a specific, recurring failure, the successful man who won't engage.

About this course

He has built the career, provided for his family, and won at nearly everything he set his mind to. So when you suggest spiritual direction, he shrugs. No time. Not important. What do you say?

In this course, Fr. Michael, a seasoned spiritual director, shows you how to reach exactly that man. He describes the high achievers he actually meets, disillusioned at the top, quietly asking what it was all for, and he lays out a plain method any director can use.

In about seven minutes of interview and a focused set of readings, you'll learn his four moves: start with the man's victories, ask the one question that keeps him coming back, hold him accountable, and build his prayer life one step at a time. You'll also learn why willpower fails where character is concerned, and what to offer instead.

Add this to your formation as a director or counselor. One lesson, one clock hour of NBCC CE credit, and a method you can use the next time a reluctant man sits across from you.

Who this course is for

The Director in Training

His most accomplished directees are the hardest to engage; he runs out of things to say when a man insists he's fine.

You don't have to argue him into it. Learn to hear the crossroads underneath the shrug.

The Catholic Counselor Seeking CE

Most CE is generic; she wants credit that sharpens how she works with high-functioning, meaning-starved male clients.

One clock hour of CE on the exact client who won't slow down.

The Pastor or Deacon

The successful men show up to the breakfast but never open up.

A simple, repeatable way to move a man from small talk to real formation.

From the course syllabus

Some of the hardest people to bring to prayer are the ones who have succeeded at everything else. The man in his forties or fifties who has built the career, closed the deals, and provided for his family often arrives at spiritual direction skeptical that he needs it at all. He is busy. He is competent. And underneath, at a crossroads he can barely name, he is asking what all of it was for.

This course teaches directors, counselors, and pastoral care providers how to reach that man. Working from an interview with Fr. Michael, an experienced spiritual director, it lays out a simple, repeatable method: open with the man's victories, ask where God is calling him to grow, hold him accountable to what he resolved, and build a life of prayer gradually rather than all at once. Along the way it takes up the question at the heart of the interior life for a high achiever, why willpower runs out where character is concerned, and what grace-assisted growth looks like instead. The material integrates the psychology of self-regulation and virtue taught at Divine Mercy University with the classical spiritual tradition of Teresa of Avila and Adolphe Tanquerey.
